Rökkurró (Iceland Airwaves ’13)

Rökkurró’s melancholic serenades are evocative of the cold and desolate landscapes of their distant homeland. Mesmerising tones and swooping strings projected against a bleak and solitary Nordic backdrop. And yet, unique warmth pervades Rökkurró’s music owed to the fragile and soothing voice of Hildur Kristín Stefánsdóttir.

Rökkurró is an Icelandic music group founded in 2006 in Reykjavík. After a 4-track EP, they were signed to 12 Tónar label. Their debut album was Það kólnar í kvöld… (meaning “It’s Getting Colder Tonight” in Icelandic). It was released in 2007 in Iceland, Europe and Japan to great critical acclaim, followed by a local tour in Iceland and an international tour that included Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland supporting Ólafur Arnalds. The follow-up album Í Annan Heim (meaning In Another World) was released in 2010. It was produced by Alex Somers. Rökkurró began working on their third studio album in 2013, to be released mid-2014.

South Iceland (2013)

Some people say Iceland looks ‘otherworldly’. The relationship between humans and nature goes beyond simple respect. South Iceland’s charm lies in its many large and impressive waterfalls and glaciers, unique geology and fascinating medieval history. The eastern part of South Iceland is dominated by the glacier Vatnajökull and the water systems linked to it. Big rivers flow from the glacier in all directions and have created large flood planes along the southern coast.

An inspiring 20 minutes “Do It Yourself” documentary film of Iceland Airwaves ‘12 music festival and the musician who participate in it. Directed by Agus Makkie a freelance film director from Indonesia; produced by himself in collaboration with his team, Icelandic and European musician. All the scenes, interview, live music was filmed on the peaceful place on earth, Reykjavik in November ’12.

Reykjavík is a small city with population slightly more than 320,000 people. Downtown area where the festival is held isn’t more than a few blocks long in every direction. This means that it’s inevitable that fans and industry people and musicians alike will cross paths all week long. From enjoying Icelandic food, running from venue to venue to catch numerous amazing musical sets, sitting down and talking with artists or even just exploring Iceland’s beautiful country side, Iceland had much for us to discover.

Jónas R Jónsson – Fiðluverslun & Viðgerðir (2013)

I drop by at Jónas place and chat with him while he is working. Jónas was a rock star in the past. He said “what happened in the past, stays in the past”. It was so fascinating to see him focus on his work and surrounded by many tools on the table, he seems like the happiest man in a peaceful place on earth.
